ASSIGNMENT #3: Research Essay; due March 29 before midnight; 25%

Your final assignment for this class is a short (but formal) research essay in which you will demonstrate the basic skills of writing (in a digital context) taught in this class. This assignment must be submitted on Blackboard before midnight on March 29. It is worth 25% of your grade.

Your assignment is the following:

Discuss the relationship between social media (such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc.) and social change (this could include revolutionary change, social movements, democratic reform, or authoritarian repression). Basically, I want you to choose a specific example of an event, political campaign, or social movement in which social media played an integral role, and explain the nature of the role it played.

Your essay must be a formal essay 1,100 to 1,400 words in length, and follow MLA formatting rules. You must include:
·      at least 3 appropriate secondary sources (such as peer-reviewed academic journals or books)
·      one image (chart, graph or diagram)
·      one embedded YouTube video (as per in-class instructions; we will discuss this on March 22)

Your answer must be in the form of an argumentative essay. You will be graded on your ability to demonstrate the lessons learned throughout the course, including:
·      creating an effective thesis statement
·      using persuasive strategies such as ethos, pathos, and/or logos, and avoiding argumentative fallacies
·      structuring your argument appropriately to create coherence
·      using and evaluating sources (this includes the lesson taught by MRU librarian Kristina Oldenburg; we will discuss this in more detail on March 15)
·      embedding images and videos for a "multimodal" argument (we will discuss this the week of March 22)

If you require a free image capture application, one of the most popular is ScreenHunter 5.1 Free (http://wisdom-soft.com/products/screenhunter_free.htm).
